“Susamam” by Şanışer
Before diving into the meaning of “Susamam”, there are a couple of facts that need to be established from the onset. First is that the headline artist, Şanışer, is repping Istanbul. Second is that the song itself is actually a mega cypher, consisting of him and 18 of his Turkish homeys.
And in terms of the track’s meaning, the word “susamam” translates into English as “I cannot be silent”. That is to say that the issues touched upon in this song are ones which apparently plague Turkish society. And the artists feel as if they have to speak out against them. Indeed their temperaments will only be satiated once the aforementioned problems are resolved.
And if you wanted to compare the lyrical content of “Susamam” to that of say perhaps a more-popular American act, it comes off in a style somewhat similar to that of Public Enemy. But whereas a Public Enemy song may have the tendency to focus exclusively on social injustice and police brutality, “Susamam” not only deals with those situation but also other pressing concerns. Some of these concerns include environmental degradation, lack of upward social mobility and mass-mind control. All of these are creatively laced with an overall dissatisfaction with the system. And the system is depicted as being abusive and limiting towards a lot of people.
Conclusion
And the general conclusion is that the artists are calling for some type of palpable action. Perhaps even along the lines of resorting to arms, to be taken in order to bring about desired changes, as in rectifying the aforementioned issues. So going back to the earlier analogy, if Public Enemy was say like 20 deep and an international-humanitarian NGO, this would be the kind of song that they would probably drop.
“Susamam”
“Susamam” is also the name of a larger social-responsibility project. And this track serves as its theme song, which the artists are spearheading.
