“Lose Yo Job” by iMarkkeyz & DJ Suede The Remix God

“Lose Yo Job” is a song which we can say that was both was never meant to be yet at the same time speaks to the current reality of society during which the time it was released.

Johniqua Charles

You see the vocalist, Johniqua Charles, is not a musician at all. In fact when the lyrics used in this song were actually recorded she was a homeless, drug-addicted working girl.  But it just so happened that one night in early February 2020 she had left her purse inside an establishment called Diamonds Gentlemen’s Club. And upon persistently trying to retrieve it after the establishment had already shutdown for the night, she was handcuffed by a security guard and escorted off the premises.

Meanwhile said security guard’s – whose name is Julius Locklear – body cam was not working at that moment. So he had one of his co-workers film the incident. And while escorting Charles off the premises she began to chant “you about to lose your job” and other utterances to Julius which, once remixed, make up the wording of this song.

Ultimately Johniqua was not actually arrested, and Locklear himself found the entire incident so amusing that he posted the video of it onto Facebook that selfsame night upon which it occurred.

IMarkkeyz and DJ Suede the Remix God get hold of “Lose Yo Job” video

Shortly after Locklear posted the video on social media, it went viral. This ultimately led to it catching the attention of remix specialists IMarkkeyz and DJ Suede. The pair instantly put Johniqua’s lyrics to a beat and officially released the track to the public.

Song goes Viral

Since then the song has also caught on with an even wider audience, becoming viral itself. And this was primarily because it was released during the same era in which protests relating to the police killing of George Floyd. And this movement has been marked by a sub-theme in which protesters are asking governments to defund police departments. Or another way of looking at it is that just as Charles was threatening the security guard who detained her that he was going to ‘lose his job’. And now the George Floyd protesters are also saying so to various police departments. So at the end of the day, Johniqua’s impromptu chant has been adopted as the unofficial anthem of the trending ‘Defund the Police’ movement.

“Lose Yo Job” positively changes Johniqua’s Life

And perhaps the most-amazing aspect of this entire story is that Johniqua’s life has also changed as a result. For as a result of the success of “Lose Yo Job”, she has been reunited with her estranged family and is accordingly getting her life back in order.

GoFundMe page was set up for Johniqua in the aftermath of all of the aforementioned. And it managed to raise in excess of $50,000 as of mid-June.
