“Crossing the Rubicon” by Bob Dylan

“Crossing the Rubicon” is a colloquial phrase which points to the idea of an individual reaching a point where he or she cannot turn back. And the way Bob Dylan uses it in this song seems to be generally in reference to the concept of mortality.  That is to say that the lyrics are primarily devoted to looking back on his life, as well as that of others, with the understanding that their time on Earth is indeed finite. And in the process, they have in fact written the unchangeable stories of their lives.
