“Show Me The Way” by Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton’s “Show Me The Way” is generally understood to be based on the singer asking for direction from outside. But Frampton has noted that he wrote it specifically in a romantic context. The addressee, when he was penning “Show Me the Way”, was his romantic interest at the time. In fact the reference to “swimming” in the song is a bit literal. For he spent the day he wrote this tune swimming and chillin’ with his girlfriend, who he was very enamored with back then. Indeed ultimately, the idea all of the diverse lyrics featured throughout point to is him being in love.

Facts about “Show Me The Way”

“Show Me the Way” was written and produced by Peter Frampton.

This track was originally released by A&M Records as a track on Peter’s album, entitled “Frampton”, on March 30th, 1975.

It wasn’t until the following year when a live version of the tune came out as part of his album “Frampton Comes Alive!” that “Show Me the Way” blew up.  Frampton has implied that perhaps the reason this was so was because during the recording of that project he gave a very-invigorated performance. And ultimately, the track reached number one in Belgium in the Netherlands. And overall it charted in 8 countries. One such country, was the United States and the United Kingdom where it peaked at numbers 6 and 10 respectively.

Peter famously used a talkbox on the live version of this song. And his doing so contributed to talkboxes themselves becoming popular at the time.
