“So Called Life” by Three Days Grace
Most easily explained, the character the vocalist is portraying is frustrated with life, as well as being depressed. That is not to say that he is suicidal. This doesn’t read like a case of a person who wants to die but rather desires to live more. It’s as if basic human emotions and activities – such as laughing, crying, sleeping and loving – have been denied him.
Furthermore, he perceives the masses around him as being too self-centered, further contributing to his less-than-ideal perception of living. And that is what he means via the choral expression “what a time to be alive”. It’s like the current world is one that he does not want to be in.
Yet and still, he is here. And going back to the notion of the vocalist not being suicidally depressed, his message isn’t that he wants to go away. It can be postulated that he does in fact realize that life is in the very least supposed to feel like a gift. But as it currently stands, he is indefinitely denied being in such a mood. And the song concludes with the chorus, which is based on his desire that some type of external impetus comes along to help him enjoy existing more by taking his mind off the fact that he is so depressed.
Three Days Grace and “So Called Life”
Three Days Grace is a rock band from Canada whose first LP came out in 2003. “So Called Life” is the lead single from their seventh studio album, 2022’s “Explosions” (also being the first song written for the project).
In between 2003’s Three Days Grace and now, their most successful joint was their sophomore studio LP, “One-X” (2006), which went triple-platinum in both the US and Canada.
Three Days Grace is currently a quartet consisting of co-founders Neil Sanderson (drummer) and Brad Walst (bassist) alongside vocalist Matt Walst and guitarist Barry Stock.
RCA Records put this track (“So Called Life”) out on 29 November 2021.
