“Last Night’s Mascara” by Brynn Cartelli
The lyrics of singer Brynn Cartelli’s “Last Night’s Mascara” are filled with symbolism. However, it is basically a song about regret. The “mascara” in this track is symbolic of events that unfolded the night before whose repercussions are being felt the following morning, which time-wise is the setting of the song. It is never forthrightly stated what these events are. However, we get the impression that they were romantic in nature, as an intimate evening was spent with a romantic partner. Also innocence was lost, and the singer has awoken “in someone else’s bed”.
She also states she has a “ringing in” her head, which insinuates that alcohol or some other drug was involved. Ultimately, even though Cartelli cannot recall exactly how she got into this situation, there is a tone of remorse, as she states from the very-first lines of the track the guy all of this transpired with is a womanizer.
