“Envy Me” is a hip hop song recorded by Chicago based rapper CalBoy. CalBoy starts this track with an excerpt from a famous children’s bedtime prayer. Thereafter, he quickly plunges into the song’s main theme. And what’s this theme? His difficult journey from humble beginnings to the top.
In an interview with Genius, CalBoy explained how the song came about. According to him, when he got the song’s beat at the studio, he found himself unable to rap to the beat because he had nothing to say. So he had to force himself to do a freestyle and rap about what he was feeling at that particular moment. That’s how the lyrics of “Envy Me” came about.
He later referred to the song’s lyrics as “authentic and real”. According to him, it’s because of how real the song is that’s why many people can relate to it.
How the bedtime prayer was used in this song
In that same interview, he revealed how the bedtime prayer for children was added to the song. According to him, the prayer portion came about because he was tired and feeling sleepy when he recorded the song. And since this prayer is said before one sleeps, he decided to include it in the song.
