It has been pointed out by a number of analysts that the title of this track (“Tear in My Heart”) gives the impression that it is a song of heartbreak. But instead, what the vocalist means by asserting that the addressee is ‘the tear in his heart’ is something like she being an emotional impetus, sentimental spark plug or however you want to put it. In other words, her ‘tearing his heart’ is akin to having the effect of making the vocalist feel more alive. Or put into simpler language, he’s now in love.
And as for the bridge, where the singer is noting that the addressee is ‘asleep in his car’, while he’s frustratingly navigating around potholes not to wake her up in the process, that is based on a real-life experience that Tyler Joseph had with Jenna Black, the lady he actually married the month before this track was officially dropped.
Or put otherwise, since he is in fact the sole writer of this song, this is Tyler’s ode of love to Jenna, and, as such, “Tear in My Heart” lacks a general applicability to some extent. However, it is still a piece that the listening audience at large can obviously identify with, considering that this song has proven to be a multi-platinum success.
