“Emergency Contact” by Pierce the Veil

Perhaps the most honest way of deciphering Pierce the Veil’s “Emergency Contact” is by classifying it as a song of lust. What we are dealing with here, despite all of the compelling analogies involved, is most simply a narrative of unrequited romantic interest. That is to say that the vocalist comes off as if he is more interested in the addressee than vice versa.

But where the honestly-lustful aspect comes in is with his pitch being based primarily on sexual metaphors and innuendos. In other words, Vic doesn’t go about complimenting the addressee’s inner qualities or anything like that. Instead his focus is on her physical appeal, and, it would seem, his desire to bonk accordingly.

But in the grand scheme of things, possessing such a disposition doesn’t disqualify him as a legitimate romantic interest. For instance, what’s being implied from the jump is that the main reason the addressee doesn’t want to take it there is because she’s the victim of a broken heart.

Also, the titular sentiment of this piece does revolve around Fuentes asserting his desire to make her his “emergency contact”. That’s a fancy way of saying that he wants her to be his next of kin. And such a notion would imply that even if the vocalist is hot and sexually excited at the moment, he is also looking forward to having a meaningful relationship with the apple of his eye. Or another, more sinister way of looking at it as him just saying that as part of his pickup strategy.

Something worth Mentioning

One of the reasons it took so long between the issuance of “Misadventure” and “The Jaws of Life” is because in between that time Vic’s little brother, Mike Fuentes, who served as the drummer of Pierce the Veil, faced some sexual misconduct allegations. And amidst that confusion, in 2018 the band went on a brief hiatus for about a year, in addition to Mike being forced to give up his spot, which went to Lionel Robinson earlier in 2022.
