Meaning of “Nightmare” by Polaris

The lyrics from “Nightmare” portray a dark and foreboding atmosphere, presenting a world on the brink of destruction. Early signs of impending doom, such as “signal fires” and “rising tides,” go unnoticed, with society being complacent or “too sedated” to acknowledge the crisis.

This oblivion creates a dystopian reality where the world is on a self-destructive path, with people feeling trapped “as a rat in a cage” and waking up each day in a desolate environment, a “pre-apocalyptic wasteland.” The repeated notion that no one will save them unless they save themselves reflects the idea that salvation lies within.

The song continues with a deeper introspection about the internal struggles people face. Being a “captive” in one’s mind and being a “hostage” to inner demons underscores the theme of mental imprisonment. However, there’s an acknowledgment of history repeating itself as past warning signs have been ignored.

The lyrics capture the chaos and hopelessness of the situation, where voices “echo in empty halls” and pleas for peace go unanswered. There’s a sense of urgency and desperation, highlighted by the visceral imagery of streets running red and forests decaying. The outro serves as a chilling conclusion, indicating a collective responsibility for the state of affairs and acceptance of the grim fate.

“We’re living in a nightmare
A pre-apocalyptic wasteland
Is there no one who can save us
If we refuse to save ourselves?
Our best intentions pave our path to hеll
Pave our path to hell”
