Meaning of “When Memories Snow” by Mitski

In “When Memories Snow”, Mitski talks about dealing with a lot of memories. She compares the memories to snow that covers her driveway. Just like she needs to clear the snow to get out, she needs to deal with these memories to move forward in her life. Sometimes, she feels like the memories are too much and wishes she could take a break from them.

When the snow melts, it’s like her memories are fading but they’re still there, and they bother her when she’s trying to sleep. It’s like she can’t escape from them, they are always around in different forms, reminding her of the past.

In the second part, Mitski feels tired and wishes to take a break to be alone and gather her thoughts. She imagines people clapping for her in the dark, maybe wishing for some support or understanding from others, but it seems like a private, lonely experience.

She wants a break to be with her own thoughts and maybe feel understood in her own private space. It paints a picture of someone feeling very alone with their memories and their feelings.

“When memories snow
And cover up the driveway
I shovel all those memories
Clear the path to drive to the store
And when memories melt
I hear them in the drainpipe
Drippin’ through the downspout
As I lie awake in the dark”
