“Be On Your Way” by Daughter

Daughter’s “Be On Your Way” is a breakup song, in a manner of speaking. The addressee can be taken as a romantic interest, though more generally, the vocalist refers to this person as a “friend”. And in any event, it can be taken that they are very close, i.e. akin to besties.

The title/chorus may read a bit cold, with Elena telling the addressee to “be on your way”. What that means, more simply relayed, is that she’s instructing this individual to leave her alone. But the verses reveal that she’s not doing so callously. Instead the singer has obviously come to the conclusion that, as things currently stand, their relationship has run its course. So she comes off as if she feels it would be more constructive if they parted ways for the time being.

The further implication is that maybe up until recently, the vocalist never conceptualized that she could be without the addressee. But now, her thinking has matured along the lines of understanding that a person should not be relegated to just a single bestie, if you will, throughout their entire life.

And more to the point is her feeling as if the addressee is someone stifling her progress. There’s also a part of the third verse that can be interpreted as alluding to their relationship having developed into an argumentative one.

So conclusively, Elena is keeping her mind open to the possibility that she and her friend will reconnect in the future and even appears to be looking forward to such coming to pass. But at the current moment, she is more than ready for the two of them to go their separate ways.
