“Landfill” by Daughter

There are a couple of postulations to be made based on lyrical evidence in the name of identifying the nature of the relationship between the vocalist and addressee before jumping directly into the meaning of Daughter’s “Landfill”.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Daughter's Landfill at Lyrics.org.

First is said individual being a romantic interest. Relatedly, this is someone whom Elena shares a rapport with, in that she admits that she ‘wants him so much’. But what is apparently preventing her from definitively moving forward with him is the fact that she concurrently ‘hates his guts’.

So that would logically infer that the verses , in which the addressee is presented as doing the vocalist dirty in various ways, has not actually transpired but rather represents her imagining him doing so.

Indeed, the terminology she uses to get this point across, such as her body being ‘thrown in a landfill’, is all metaphorical anyway. And what it boils down to is Elena basically having no faith whatsoever that this person would treat her well if she were to give him her heart.

So conclusively, what all of this entails is the romantic dilemma the vocalist is going through. And that’s because, let’s say from a surface perspective, the addressee is akin to the apple of her eye. But internally, she is very much convinced that he’s along the lines of being the epitome of a toxic lover.

Lyrics to Daughter's "Landfill"

Daughter

Fronted by Elena Tonra and backed by the following, the band Daughter began their professional career in 2010:

  • Igor Haefeli on guitar
  • Remi Aguilella on drums

Elena, Igor and Remi are respectively from the UK, Switzerland and France.

As far as their joint discography goes, this act has been especially active during the middle part of the 2010s. It was during this decade that they dropped their only two studio albums to date, “If You Leave” (2013) and “Not to Disappear” (2016).

Release of “Landfill”

“Landfill” isn’t found on any of the aforementioned albums. It is rather from “His Young Heart”, the EP which Daughter self-released on 20 April 2011 and that stands as their second EP overall.

This EP contains only four tracks, with “Landfill” being the first of these tracks. It also holds the distinction of being the EP’s most popular track. The EP’s cover image you see on the EP is a picture of Elena as a child.

This song was written exclusively by Elena Tonra. She produced it with Igor Haefeli, whom she was apparently dating at the time.

It should be noted that all four songs on “His Young Heart” were composed entirely by Elena.
