Bread’s “Mother Freedom” Lyrics Meaning

Bread’s “Mother Freedom” was released during the early 1970s, which was a very-woke time in the history of the United States. Said era was marked by political protests and individuals trying to secure their “freedom” on various fronts. And that is the general concept which Bread is speaking to. They present freedom as something which must be actively sought after. And once an individual does become privy to what it actually means, it then becomes his responsibility to teach it to others.

I didn’t write the song, I certainly didn’t take it to meaning that way. Probably because l had not heard of woke until after Obama. Yes there were many protest against the war and civil rights in the early and mid 70s.

“A very woke time.” LOL. Great historical analysis. Here’s what woke means as used by today’s conservatives. The use of ‘woke’ is code for “We’re racist homophobes and we don’t care who knows it.”
