“Build It Better” by Natalie Imbruglia

What Natalie Imbruglia’s “Build It Better” appears to be saying conclusively is that if you’re in a romantic relationship that fails, then the next time around you must endeavor to “build it better”. It’s like use the opportunity of a broken heart to improve yourself and your chances of romantic success into the future.

But at the same time it’s as if most of the actual lyrics of the song, i.e. the verses, center on the selfsame vocalist espousing this philosophy depressingly facing the reality that her relationship with her significant other, i.e. the addressee, has freshly dissolved. So there’s sort of like a mixed message being presented here.

But perhaps what Natalie is saying is that yes, she is in her feelings at the moment. But she isn’t going to let the harrowing prospect of being lonely devastate her. After all, apparently being taught by experience itself, she knows that a considerable amount of risk comes along with falling in love. And she also understands that if it does in fact ‘all fall down’, then the next step is to “build it better”, seemingly for the next going. So most simply put this is a song of romantic optimism, at least ideologically.

Natalie Imbruglia's "Build It Better" Lyrics

Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia was an actress on the popular Aussie soap opera Neighbours prior to venturing into music in the mid-1990s. That means that as of the release of this track on 18 June 2021, she has been in the game going on three decades. And Imbruglia also has the history to prove it. The 1990s in particular was the decade in which she won two MTV Awards, two Brit Awards, eight ARIA Awards, a Billboard Music Award, etc. And she achieved all that within the time span of only two years.

But as evident by the plethora of ARIA Awards, she has understandably proven most popular in her own homeland. So even though her first album, “Left of the Middle”, peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200, she hasn’t really made any noise in the US since. But Natalie did manage to top the UK Singles Chart in 2005 with her third album, “Counting Down the Days” (2005) and has more or less maintained a notable presence in Europe.

An interesting fact about the songstress is that also during the late-1990s she somewhat briefly dated David Schwimmer, i.e. the actor who played “Ross” on Friends.
