Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping” Lyrics Meaning

Chumbawamba’s classic hit “Tubthumping” is filled to the brim with inspirational texts. Throughout the song’s very catchy chorus, the narrator talks about getting knocked down multiple times but getting up again and again each time. And he tells the person or entity doing this to him that they are wasting their time because they are never going to succeed in keeping him down. Now who this person or people are, the listener is never made aware of. And that’s because the narrator never makes that clear.

Boff Whalley talks about “Tumbthumping”

Speaking to The Guardian, Boff Whalley (Chumbawamba’s lead guitarist), confirmed the above. According to him, the song was inspired by an Irish neighbor of theirs. This neighbor would often return home completely drunk and would fall over while trying to get into his house.

However, he apparently would get up again and not give up on his quest to get into the house. And that’s likely where the band got the inspiration for the line: “I get knocked down but I get up again…“.

Owing to the above, it is so clear that this same neighbor is the one the narrators are talking about throughout the song when they say he drinks all manners of alcoholic beverages and sings songs that remind him of both the good and bad times.

A song about resilience

Despite the comical event that inspired the song, it is a really meaningful and inspirational tune. According to Whalley the song is about “the resilience of ordinary people”.

“I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down”

“I never thought I would be battling with cancer at 54, but here I am. During one of my recent hospital visits, my doctor noticed that I was feeling down and suggested a song that he thought might help lift my spirits. The song was ‘Tubthumping’ and the lyrics that he wanted me to pay attention to were, ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again, you are never gonna keep me down’.

Those words are more powerful than they seem. They remind me that even when things get tough, I need to keep pushing forward and not give up. I believe if I had such motivation and mental strength earlier, my situation might not have been this bad.”

“My name is Daniel also known as Danny Boy. When I was a lot younger, I was drawn to this song because of the part that sings ‘Oh Danny Boy, Danny Boy, Danny Boy’, hence my nickname. I didn’t pay much attention to the rest of the lyrics then. Now, as an adult struggling to keep my small business afloat, the lyrics have taken on a new meaning for me and it’s like the song was actually mad for me.

I’ve been knocked down many times and it’s been difficult to find the strength to get back up. But listening to ‘Tubthumping’ reminds me that I’m not alone in my struggles. Others have faced similar challenges and managed to overcome them. It gives me hope and inspires me to keep pushing forward, no matter how many times I’ve been knocked down.”

Danny boy is the title of a song. Not the name of the neighbour.

There is actually a famous Irish ballad which goes by the title “Danny Boy”. While there is no concrete evidence that shows that the “Danny Boy” mentioned in the lyrics is a reference to the aforementioned song, you might actually have a point.

I strongly suspect that “Danny Boy” is an allusion to the stereotype of the Irish as drunks.

I’ve never been confident that this was supposed to be inspirational. On the contrary, it seems to be about a very out-of-control drunk who is pissing his life away and hurts those around him, but who tries to frame the hardship he needlessly makes for himself as a noble struggle. That’s kind of pathetic, but not at all uncommon.

Wow…that’s a far step from what the song say’s….even the video doesn’t portray that…..Danny Boy is a song, not a stereotype…too bad you can’t see the encouragement in this song…I love it..makes me happy…kinda my theme song..=) Cheers

I was told recently that ‘Danny Boy’ in this song is about a real person who one of the song writers happened to meet and get to know in unfortunate circumstances. An Irish man (not very old) who the song was based on, a heavy drinker, drug user that came back fighting every time he got knocked down, through life or alcohol (mostly alcohol/drugs ). THAT Danny Boy didn’t give up easily, had stories to tell and was very well known locally. If this is true? The Danny it refers to sadly died recently, very possibly because of his additions. As I said this may be fantasy but certainly fits the description of a ‘Danny Boy’ that lived in our town. RIP

Your wrong, Danny boy referes to Danny speech from the film Brassed off. Danny is the first vocals you hear on the track.

  5. Terry Morris says:

Tub Thumping reminds me of a film I once watched about a haunted house. It was haunted by a boy that was drowned in the bath by his father. The father lifted the boys both legs high up in the air while the boy was in the bath. As the boy was drowning he franticly thumped the inside of the bath, fighting for his life….!
