Coldplay’s “Coloratura” Lyrics Meaning

Coldplay’s “Coloratura” reads like something the Beatles would have dropped, a bunch of words that come off like they make any cohesive sense, but then at the end of the day, who knows.  What is evident is that the wording is primarily based on an astronomical motif.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Coldplay's Coloratura at Lyrics.org.

And apparently, the reason it is so would be to point to some idea like the world being small, or mankind being one or however it is one interprets those kinds of notion. And as for the title of the song, “coloratura” is actually a musical term. It is most commonly used in relation to opera.

But luckily, the vocalist does actually state explicitly what this piece is “all about”. And that would be “the love you’re sending out”. So once again going back to similarities to hippyism, this song’s ideological leanings are also reminiscent of the free love movement.

Facts about “Coloratura”

This song is roughly 10 minutes and 20 seconds in length. As of its release, “Coloratura” holds the distinction of being the longest song Coldplay has ever put out in their 25-year existence.

The track was co-produced and co-written by super composer Max Martin. He produced “Coloratura” with two other individuals, Bill Rahko and Oscar Holter. And the other co-writers are:

  • John Metcalfe
  • Davide Rossi
  • Paris Strother

And of course the aforementioned writers wrote this song with Coldplay.

This is one of the tracks on the playlist of Coldplay’s 2021 album “Music of the Spheres”. And they made the song public on 23 July of that year. The release was made possible by Parlophone Records and Atlantic Records. Both labels are subsidiaries of the Warner Music Group.

The song “Higher Power” also appears on “Music of the Spheres”. Actually it was marketed as the album’s lead single.

Coldplay first teased “Coloratura”, in a very vague way, on 20 July 2021.

Coldplay’s coloratura, is about a being who views the world from a celestial point, noticing the dynamics with which it rotates but then when Chris sings, “in this crazy world, l do…” regardless of the specs of one’s life, the fact that we keep pushing makes the universe even more beautiful. I, myself call it the 10 minutes of hope

Isn’t the song about life after death? The way he talks about everyone before us is there welcoming us, and it’s the end of death and doubt…

    • Marcelo says:

I totally agree, futhermore, is a place in the universe maybe within a constellation and other planets where everybody is allowed, filled with colors where death and doubt don’t exist.

It absolutely is. I’m also certain that it was inspired by what countless people have described in near-death experiences where they get glimpses of what awaits us all after death.

I think it feels like a goodbye song. It may be the chord progressions or something but it has that feeling of happiness with sadness as well. Not sure what the song is about though. One of my favourite Coldplay songs as it sounds pink floydish

    • Syd Barret says:

Pink Floyd would be proud of the homage and the fact that coldplay have taken real music unbelievable live performances to another level.
They have the potential to be the greatest band of all TIME

This song has magic! It transports me to a beautiful place not in this planet… a feeling of getting out of here to a perfect place where all you can feel is love… For ever Cold Play 🙌

The guitar riffs at the bridge section at the end gives me all the Pink Floyd vibes. This is a beautifully written and composed piece of music… truly moving.

  7. Moira says:

I have a theory that deceased artists channel songwriters… the meaning of coloratura in relation to opera, wasn’t it queen that pioneered rock opera? And didn’t queen sing Galileo in bohemian rhapsody? This is coldplays bohemian rhapsody and I think Freddy Mercury channelled this work…

  8. Nuno says:

Coloratura it’s just everything you all said.
It’s a huge piece of music has huge as human imagination can be, has human love should be the lyrics are so wide that allows one to give them meaning he feels.
Coldplay at their best until now.
Already waiting for the next album!
In a panorama of so much commercial nonsense rubbish called music it’s o delightful to listen this piece of art.

I have just come across this song – a certain masterpiece and am glad I have been alive to observe this song.

I feel that this song gives you many pieces of truth that are unseen and not commonly accepted by society. I believe in reincarnation, so my perspective is that of someone ‘visiting’ Earth in a life. I think this song provides the following ‘hints’.

Our souls come to this Earth, our parents welcome us and we complete a ‘death’ cycle to live a life as one.
We come here to learn lessons – a place that we dream about before becoming alive, that anyone can visit. The melodies & love (the energy that you give to this world) that you can give freely impact this world – and can be even greater if you’re one of many feathers of a bird (as a crowd).
I read the reference to Galileo two-fold:
    1. Galileo saw that the moon was not perfectly round (despite many saying so before him) – Things may not be what they seem as accepted norm – challenge to ensure your understanding.
    2. Galileo had the courage to stand up to the common belief and got him in trouble with the church, Chris is asking for us to have courage to see through the accepted.

The reference to the universe’s objects – comparing us on the Earth to any other celestial body. Especially as humans, reminding us that we are here for the ride, be patient, this journey for us is just as huge as any celestial body.

But as we only know the now and nothing beyond – amongst the craziness in this world, having acceptance of being present right here and right now with your soul partner, or humanity is all he wants.

Then to remind us once again that its all about the love and energy you’re putting into this world.

I think the 3rd verse is a recap of the 2nd to highlight the importance of the concept or take another perspective to allow the listener to understand differently.

I feel the 4th verse is reminding us that we are mirrors of each other and the lessons we’re learning here on Earth. Plurubus unum translates to “One out of many” and unus mundus to “One world” – reminding us that we’re all connected and we impact/inspire/effect everyone here.
Just as other planets inspire us.
On face value the line for the colours reference our planets, however I see this reference to chakra colours instead of the planets – especially as Mercury is known to be grey instead of purple. Skipping the distinction between blue and indigo.

The final meaning I think there is is in the last line about reminding us to stick together to share the love and make it through this life – regardless of the craziness.

A beautiful song, I don’t know if others see the same meaning as I do. I hope there is a takeaway for someone – this is definitely a song with 100 meanings.

If this meaning resonates with you – another band to check out is a “Caligula’s Horse” – especially their ‘Bloom’ album. They’re prog-rock on the heavier side, but they have some wonderful meanings in their lyrics as well.
Sending out love – thank-you Coldplay!
