“Empty” by Dust In Mind
Dust in Mind is a French nu metal outfit consisting of the following members:
- Jen Gervais (vocalist)
- Dam Dausch (vocalist who also plays guitar)
- Phil Miralles (guitarist)
- Xav Guiot (bassist)
- Teggarst Marasi (drummer)
They’ve released four studio albums between 2015 and 2021, the latest being titled “CTRL”. And it is via that effort that we get “Empty”, which was more specifically released on 19 November 2021 through the DarkTunes Music Group. And to note, this song was produced by Dam Dausch.
The Lyrics of “Empty”
The title of this song is derived from the vocalist admitting that she ‘feels empty’ on the inside. Based on the rest of the lyrics, that would be another way of Jen putting forth that she is suffering from a serious case of depression and feeling alienated from others.
Truthfully, there’s a lot being relayed in these lyrics. For example, we find out in the bridge that she is implying that part of her frustration is found in the fact that there’s no one willing to entertain her exasperations. It’s as if there is so much hate and doubt welling up within the vocalist’s soul but no constructive way for her to get it out.
And yes, as expressed in the second verse, there is the presence of love also. But as it currently stands, the positive sentiments don’t stand a chance against the negativity.
So in the chorus, the vocalist comes off as if she is actually looking forward to death. That is not to say that Gervais is portraying a suicidal character per se. But it’s obvious that she perceives little to no value “be(ing) part of this humanity”.
