“Heard It All Before” by Dinah Jane
In “Heard It All Before”, singer Dinah Jane is addressing an ex lover of hers. He is begging her to take him back, but Jane is just like she has “heard it all before”. Or put differently, his flattering words are falling on deaf ears, as she acknowledges that he will revert back to his unfavorable ways on top of Jane now having “fallen out of love” with him.
Indeed this is someone who she has been “running up behind” for three long years. And she had remained loyal to him even when he “(was) no good”. However, his level of commitment was not reciprocal. But now that Jane has excommunicated him, the dude is “shook” and “blowing up (her) line”, meaning he is calling her telephone like crazy. But Jane reasserts in the second verse that she is not interested in hearing any “more apologies”. She also enlightens the listeners to the fact that this dude is someone she has been dealing with since high school, once again alluding to their long history.
Ultimately Jane feels that he is getting what he deserves due to the suffering he is experienced from being “curve(d)” by her. And she seems to relish the fact that she is causing him such emotional pain. For instance, she mentions in the post-chorus that she is already “out here scouting”, basically meaning that she is looking for a new boyfriend. This is a statement, which based on the way her ex is portrayed throughout the song, is likely to cause him even more grief.
Jane concludes the track by calling her ex a “lil’ bi*ch”. In other words, throughout the whole process of repeatedly being told the same meaningless lines and his incessant ‘begging’, Jane has now lost respect for him and is committed to moving on without him.
