“Heart As Big As Liverpool” by Pete Wylie (ft. The Mighty Wah!)

The lyrics of “Heart As Big As Liverpool” start off reading like a song where the vocalist is emitting his undying appreciation for a loved one, the addressee, who has held him down through thick and thin. Seemingly, it is this same individual who Pete is biggin’ up as having a ‘heart as big as his hometown’, that of course being Liverpool. So it’s as if Wylie is killing two birds with one stone, simultaneously showing love to a special someone and his ‘hood of Liverpool at the same time.

The nature of the vocalist’s relationship with the addressee is never specified. Another aspect of the narrative that is never truly clarified is if the possessing a “heart as big as Liverpool” is a characteristic that belongs to the singer or the addressee. All lyrics considered, the safe conclusion would be that said designation applies to both of them. And in the mind of the vocalist, saying someone has a “heart as big as Liverpool” comes as being the ultimate interpersonal compliment.

That’s because as implied, what possessing the titular characteristic actually entails, most simply put, is a faithful commitment to loved ones. So implicitly, what is being put forth here is not only that Liverpudlians have a ‘big heart’. But more to the point, they are the types to support each other in times of need. Thus, one of the advantage of being associated with such an individual is the comfort of knowing that “you are not alone”. So basically, true Liverpudlians are being depicted as a compassionate lot.
