“Heartbreak Down” by Hunter Girl
The way the title reads in the chorus is as the vocalist asserting that she’s “gonna put this heartbreak down”. That’s a poetic way of saying that she is currently reeling from a breakup but has now resolved to move on with her life.
As implied in the first verse, doing so is not an easy endeavor. Indeed at this point, the vocalist is finding it challenging to even go 30 minutes without thinking about her ex. Also, she acknowledges that resorting to booze as a remedy, as she is doing, may not be ideal, as it might cause her to get weak and “slip up” by calling him back.
But Hunter’s efforts also consist of what can be deemed more definitive measures. For instance, she changed the background on her phone, with the previous pic holding down that spot presumably being one that reminded her of her ex. And also, as revealed in the second verse, the vocalist is entertaining the idea of hooking up with another guy, as you never know – maybe another love is out there for her.
So ultimately, the category this song is classified into is a manner of perspective. Perhaps as intended, we can say that “Heartbreak Down” is meant to be inspirational, i.e. encouraging individuals like the vocalist not to give in to post-romance depression. But at the same time, the presence of said depression permeates throughout, thus making this track read, in part, like a romantic lamentation.
Hunter Girl and “Heartbreak Down”
Hunter Girl is the stage name of a singer from Tennessee, Hunter Wolkonowski, who got her foot in the door by participating on American Idol and faring well therein. More specifically she was a contestant on Season 20 of the show, which aired in early 2022, at one point being the favorite to win the entire season. But ultimately she emerged as the runner-up behind Noah Thompson.
“Heartbreak Down”, which came out on 18 March 2022, was officially released while Season 20 was still airing and also served as one of the original songs she used during the contest.
That said, there is very little available about Hunter Girl at the time of this writing. But by the looks of things “Heartbreak Down”, which she wrote herself, is her first proper single and is part of an EP she put out titled “One Day”.
Hunter Girl performed this song on an episode of American Idol that aired on 17 April 2022 (being taped a few days prior). The said performance resulted in both “Heartbreak Down” and “One Day” performing admirable on iTunes’ chart.
