“If You Ask Me To” by Charli D’Amelio

Charli D’Amelio’s “If You Ask Me To” is a song of both heartbreak and unrequited love. That is to say that, as eventually revealed in the second verse, the vocalist and addressee used to be an item.

But in the here and now, he has moved on to someone else, whom Charli basically considers to be a third party in their relationship. And that would be the person who, as also implied in the second verse, the addressee unceremoniously dumped the vocalist for. Yet and still, Charli can actually perceive why he is so attracted to this other lady and conclusively, still has strong feelings for him.

So this is a very vulnerable love song, one in which many may argue that the vocalist should just leave the apple of her eye alone.

And to some degree, it reads as if she already has, more or less by force. But the unfortunate reality for Charli is that being officially separated from her ex still doesn’t minimize the discomfort she feels as a result of not having him, which is exacerbated when she sees him with the next chick.

So as the situation currently stands, if the addressee were to ‘ask her to’, the vocalist would expeditiously “come running” back.
