“I’m So Sick” by Flyleaf

Flyleaf’s “I’m So Sick” is one of those types of rock songs whereas rather than relying on a direct interpretation of the lyrics, it would be best to resort straight to singer/co-writer Lacey Sturm’s explanation.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Flyleaf's I'm So Sick at Lyrics.org.

As Lacey explained it, in the first verse for instance it would seem that she is playing a role, as in personifying the world itself. Or let’s say that more specifically, what she is speaking to is something like mainstream socialization.

Flyleaf is in fact a band with a Christian slant. So what it is that’s so “sick and messed up”, according to Lacey, which inspired this song is once again the world itself.

But later on, as in the second verse, it can be ascertained that she is now singing from a more microcosmic perspective, or something like that. Sometimes in cases such as these, pronouns, viewpoints or what have you are switched around so liberally by the singer that it becomes difficult to describe the song in a linear fashion.

But again, we have Lacey’s explanation in tow which, combined with the lyrics, make what’s being put forth more understandable.

So regardless of what character us respective listeners may deem she is relaying these sentiments from, again, what they speak to is the world being “sick”. And since we are all living therein, said sickness is likewise passed onto us.

But this wouldn’t be something like COVID-19 which Flyleaf is speaking to. Instead, it is us being influenced to behave in manners, such as selfishness as pointed out in the lyrics, which in reality are not conducive to our wellbeing.
