Meaning of “Don’t Play With It” by Lola Brooke (ft. Billy B)
Perhaps the most concise way we can describe Lola Brooke’s “Don’t Play With It” is as a female gangsta rap track. By the looks of things both Lola Brooke and Billy B are from the mean streets of Brooklyn, as in the true ‘hood, not the gentrified part. And as depicted they are living that life accordingly.
For instance, Lola seems to imply that she prefers dating the likes of mobsters. And Billy lets it be known that if some dude she uses for s-x of the oral kind gets upset about it, she’d run up on him with the gat. Indeed she comes off as being the most-violent of the two, while Brooke is more money-minded.
As far as the titular phrase goes, initially, as utilized in the chorus, it reads like an instruction to a romantic partner, not to “play with” her holy part, if you will. But later, it is also used to point to the idea that the “hitters” the ladies have at their command are indeed serious ones.
So all of that considered, perhaps what’s being put forth in the chorus, as with the conclusion of the second verse, is a warning to romantic interests to behave correctly, i.e. not to try to play Lola or Billy out.
“Don’t play with it, don’t play with it, don’t play with it
Come on, baby, don’t play with it (Don’t play with it, mwah)
Just lay in it (Ooh), spend all day in it (Uh-uh-uh-uh)
My hitters don’t play with it, don’t play with it, don’t play with it (Grr)
They stay with it (Bah)
I’m okay with it (Yeah)
(It’s Billy) Whеn it comes to me they don’t play with it”

“Lola’s preference for dating dr-g dealers and Billy’s fierce independence and readiness to retaliate create such a powerful, badass imagery. This is female gangsta rap at its best, giving us a glimpse of their experiences on the mean streets. And that use of the titular phrase – it’s a stern warning to anyone who might cross them. Don’t mess with these ladies!”

“The multi-dimensional use of the song’s main phrase is pretty intriguing. It starts as a sexual command but then morphs into a showcase of their strength and authority. Essentially, it’s a testament to their unyielding power, both in their personal lives and their ‘hood. This track is a stark reminder not to underestimate or ‘play’ Lola or Billy. Respect!”
