Meaning of “Me and My Husband” by Mitski
There appears to be quite a few explanations of Mitski’s “Me and My Husband” which interpret it as a tender romantic piece. But according to Mitski, it’s a lot more practical than that.
The vocalist does go about, most notably, citing the commitment between herself and her husband, i.e. their resolution to “stick together”. But it is indeed a resolution, as the songstress is making that statement while concurrently being experienced enough to know that the euphoric stage of marriage doesn’t last forever.
Furthermore, Mitski is aware that a person may not always grow happy or content as a spouse. But she has accepts the fact that the addressee is indeed her husband and therefore is not going to look for a way out of the relationship. Also, as illustrated in the second verse, he loves her likewise, being able to mitigate the vocalist’s self-image issues.

This is the life we’ve chosen.’ It’s about sticking together even when the going gets tough, even when the love doesn’t feel all fluttery and butterflies-in-your-stomach kinda thing.
But hey, that’s the beauty of it, right? It’s not about the picture-perfect love story, it’s about weathering the storm together. The tune really nails that vibe, telling us that even if things aren’t perfect, there’s something pretty powerful about choosing to stick it out.
