Meaning of Scott Street by Phoebe Bridgers

“Scott Street” is a breakup song, in a manner of speaking. Or more specifically, in “Scott Street” we find Phoebe Bridgers addressing her ex. And the interesting thing is that as far as the verses are concerned, there isn’t any type of overt sentiments of regret, animosity or anything like that on her part.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Phoebe Bridgers's Scott Street at Lyrics.org.

The first verse, even though the listener may not realize it at the time, focuses on how Phoebe is handling the single life. And whereas the second verse does have the singer interacting with her ex, it is possible, the way the song is structured, that the listener still would be not be cognizant of that fact the first time around, i.e. that the person she is singing to is her former-and-not-current lover.

It isn’t until the outro that it’s firmly implied that the two of them used to be together. This segment revolves around the vocalist instructing the addressee “not [to] be a stranger”. That’s another way of saying that even though they are going their separate ways, the other party should make an effort to remain in contact from time to time.

But that said, earlier on the chorus does imply that Phoebe is under the impression that the other party feels some remorse. The second verse can also be interpreted as perhaps hinting that she personally isn’t too keen on aging without a spouse. And as the story goes, these lyrics do in part reflect the real-life relationship between its two writers, Phoebe Bridgers and Marshall Vore, as they were an item a few years back.

“Do you feel ashamed
When you hear my name?”
