Meaning of “Seasons in the Sun” by Terry Jacks

The original version of this song – called “Le Moribond” (translated “The Dying Man”) and sung in French – was based on the tale of an old man dying of heartache due to his wife cheating on him with his best friend. However, Terry Jacks, in dedication to a friend who was dying of leukemia at the time, reworked the track, excluding references to the aforementioned story and instead basing it on a man’s final words to some distinct people whom he loves.

There are three of such individuals who are highlighted in the track. First is a friend he has known since childhood and as such, recounts fond memories of the two of them growing up together. The second appears to be his dad, whom Terry acknowledges has tried to exert a positive influence on his undisciplined life. The third person is referred to as his “little one”, implying that she may be a child.  What is definitely known about “Michelle” is that she helped lift up Terry’s spirit at times he felt depressed.

Lyrics of "Seasons in the Sun"

Ultimately the “seasons in the sun” indeed represent the seasons, as in the passing of and renewal of time. In days past, these periods were marked by enjoyment between Terry and the people he is singing to. And despite the fact that his character is now passing away, he is wise enough to understand that the “seasons in the sun” will continue to march on and only asks that when Spring does comes around for his loved ones to remember him.

Someone I cared for died at 19, he had a promising future and it was all taken away in a second. Every time I hear this song I think of him. Ironically he had a sister named Michelle.

I nearly died last summer. Don’t know how often I listened to this song again and again.

I was in grade 8 when this song was released. The first time I heard it was in music class and I started crying. Very embarrassing. We were to sing the song but I was too choked up to sing. I have had an aversion to listening to the song ever since and turn it off if it comes on. It still makes me sad.

I was also in 8th grade when this song came out. I had went to stay with my sister for the summer, met new friends, and had a boyfriend starting halfway through the summer. When I started 9th, we went to different schools and he broke up with me because he found a new gf, then he moved out of state and I never saw him or my other new friends again either. To me the song reminds me of that summer that was so full of fun and adventure, and then the sadness of when it was all over.

I was seven yrs old -I’d transferred to as many different schools ( felt like ) but possibly true – my parents had just divorced- For the second time- and mother’s new husband moved us from SC to fort bliss TX – sports was my salvation – I excelled at base ball and football beyond my age – I’m not sure why I wasn’t on a team –
maybe I arrived after registration – anyway – I was free to roam and naturally migrated to the ball fields – a team sponsored by chevron 10- 12 yr olds were short of players and were gonna have to forfeit- classic – put
me in coach- haha – he did – I played 2nd base and lead off batter the entire season- MY POINT IS— this song blasted all summer – remember- I was living on a military base during the Vietnam war —I thought it ( the song) was about a doomed boy Being drafted and saying his final good byes— it was the first time lyrics- of any kind- touched my soul- and those did so -deeply- we moved to Hanau Germany that fall— My only recollections about EL Paso is that ALL Of The parents ( except mine) – they never watched me play —-cheered my scoring ability against the older boys( think tiny strike zone)—- and the uniquely exquisite pain that suddenly slices into my heart- whenever that short emotionally packed chapter of my life manages to struggle through the murky decades of my existence to deliver

Life can surely deliver the proverbial hardball sometimes. Praying your pain only made you stronger and able to find happiness.

You had a truly awful childhood, and parents who really weren’t. But you have risen up against it, if only to tell your story. You didn’t deserve your awful parents, especially since you turned out, despite your size, to be a baseball player that anyone would cheer on and be terribly (vocally) proud of, every chance they got to watch you play! Consider yourself cheered on anyway—I bet all your friends parents did!

She did not have a truly horrible child hood. She had a normal one, with working parents.
I am not a parent, but am a latchkey kid from the 70s and 80s. I am also a Veteran, and this song means something to me. As music is meant to mean something to everyone. It’s not inclusive to any group, but meant to mean to something to everyone individually.

In July of 1973 my older sister died in a car accident. Her name was Michelle, she was only 14….Goodbye Michelle it’s hard to die……

May God bless and keep you always, my friend. At least your sister lives (and always has) lived on in your memories of her. The biggest fear of the dying, is that they’ll be forgotten. Thanks to you, that didn’t happen to your sister!..

For some reason I have always been in love with this song….since I was child…….it’ s sad but it “stops me” every time…I’m 56….can’t remember when it was on the radio,……every day….

I first heard this song at 7.5 and ay 8 was the first first 45 record I heard. I knew it was about suicide, etc.

    • Bella says:

It’s not about suicide. It’s about his friend dying from cancer.

      • Jeff says:

The song isn’t about suicide but several scenes from the video sure are. First, we see a closeup of a hand holding a massive overdose of sleeping pills. Next, we see a closeup of a suicide note, and finally we see a picture of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night” painting, which is often used as a reminder of his tragic suicide by shooting near Orsay, France.

  8. Younger sister says:

My older brother died at 17 years in 1967 – this song is my memory of him.

  12. d says:

my dear mother just died a few weeks ago and my kids and grandkids came to visit me for a few weeks… when they left, I found myself singing this song and grieving.

I remember this powerful song as a teenager going through hard times.

  13. Lady Cham says:

I was a kid when this came out during the Vietnam War. I always thought of it as a tribute from a dying soldier on the field saying his last goodbyes…

“It’s hard to die…with all the birds singing in the sky”. He’s outside likely focusing on the birds while the horrors of war sounds fade.

  14. Chuck says:

We lost our son suddenly in 2022 and I was with him as he died. Growing up we weren’t very close, but we became very close. In the passing of a moment, we lost our son, daughter in law, and our 2 grand babies. This song reminds me of him….

I too am a child of those times I was 7 years old and my only sister had the record and she would play this song for me. I only grasped the meaning as I got older. It’s by far my favorite song of my youth. For I have lost the only person that was always there for me. I am the youngest of 4.There is a 4 & 5 years difference between me and my sister and our oldest brother. My Brother Krandall lost his life while serving in the U.S.Navy in 1990 We were just a year apart him and I. We almost looked like twins. Anyway we skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. We did exactly that with girlfriends and all the place we explored as kids. He was the best brother a little brother could ever have. This song it says goodbye but yet it also says (he’ll be there) as long as I carry him with me in my heart he will be.
