“My Last Breath” by James Newman
James Newman’s “My Last Breath” is actually a love song with a very-powerful message. For starters, the addressee would be the singer’s romantic interest. And their relationship, as presented, is indeed on the rocks.
However, he is confident that they “will survive” as a couple. Or stated otherwise, he wants her to commit, as he has, to seeing this situation through as opposed to giving up on their romance, for he personally is very much in love.
And the illustration of this point brings us to the song’s title. He uses a fictional scenario in which both he and his lover are “deep-sea divers”. And basically what he is saying is that if they found themselves stranded at the bottom of the ocean and running out of oxygen, he would give her his “last breath” as opposed to taking it himself. That pretty much is a fancy way of saying that he would die for her. And again, he is apparently making this exclamation to prevent her from leaving him.
So again this is a true love song, in which the singer is expressing the ultimate form of affection. That is to say he loves his partner even more than he loves himself. And he is still making this assertion despite their relationship having serious issues.
