The implication is that whereas she may have dated other guys, none of them actually committed to her before. And throughout the years he too has learned “the rules” of love. Accordingly, he is letting the addressee know that he empathizes with her. He also lets her know that he is forever going to be the one to hold her down.

All in all, the narrator uses this song to assure his sweetheart of his everlasting love and support.

“Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you”

Music Video

The official music video employed Simon West as its director. It was filmed in the UK, specifically the city of London. Said video was sort of an impromptu, low-budget affair. It was so low-budget that the clothes Astley wears on the video are the same ones he showed up to the set with.

It should be noted that prior to this song blowing up, Astley actually worked as an assistant in a music studio.

Writing and Production Credits

This song was written and produced by the trio of Matt Aitken, Mike Stock and Pete Waterman, a popular music team from the UK. And it was Pete Waterman – or more specifically his feelings for a woman he was dating at the time – which served as the main inspiration for the tune.

Release Date of “Never Gonna Give You Up”

RCA Records released this tune on 27 July 1987. It is the lead single from Rick Astley’s debut album, which is entitled Whenever You Need Somebody.

It was a phenomenal hit during its day, reportedly reaching number 1 in 25 different countries. This includes accomplishing the feat on the two most-important music charts of all, the Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. It also achieved this feat in nations as diverse as Zimbabwe and South Africa.

In more recent times it has regained a large following due to an internet prank/meme referred to as rickrolling. In fact Rick Astley even earned the MTV Europe Award due to the newfound popularity of the meme and resultantly the song/video itself. And even though the heyday of rickrolling may have been during the aughts, the internet-based joke has remained popular throughout the years.

It was later even even adopted into the Fortnite videogame franchise. Indeed when a YouTuber created a Lego version of the video in 2020, his effort proved popular and appreciated enough to make headlines.

Sampled in Chrono Trigger?

It was believed that the music composer of the classic NES videogame Chrono Trigger (1995), Yasunori Mitsuda, sampled this song onto the game due to similarities between “Never Gonna Give You Up” and an instrumental contained therein. However, Mitsuda has clarified that he had never heard the song prior. He however, did acknowledge that the two tracks sounded similar.

This song has been covered by a host of artists throughout the year. And Melania Trump even used lyrics from it when she was campaigning for her husband’s successful Presidential campaign in 2016.

This tune has also made its way onto a number of popular television shows as well, such as the following:

  • Degrassi: The Next Generation (2003)
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005)
  • Family Guy (2007)
  • South Park (2016)
