Meaning of “New House” by Rex Orange County

“New House” is Rex Orange County’s ode to his woman, whose real name is Thea. He is so enamored with this lady that in this song he pictures the two of them together in a house in the near future. However, apparently he’s already been living with her since 2017 which is likely why the song is called “New House”, as in they’ll be moving into a fresh home together.

In the first verse, Rex displays emotions which can be interpreted as he’s suffering from some sort of depression. Indeed he doesn’t feel that anyone can “save” him. However, he does find some comfort in being with his girlfriend, who is able to soothe the pain.

The second verse gives us an even better glimpse at Orange County’s mental disposition. In it he doesn’t refer directly to his honeybun. Instead it is focused on his extreme introverted tendencies and procrastinating, somewhat-pessimistic attitude that he will never get over the affliction, but if so, he can put that battle off until tomorrow.

In the third verse, Rex basically laments that the only time people ever get in contact with him is when “they need something”, and unfortunately these are very-common occurrences. Yet again, there is no reference to his woman.

But finally the outro switches back to the subject of Thea. Here he basically states that the reason he is able to deal with the aforementioned distresses is through her love. So even though at times it seems like “New House” veers off the topic, it is all leading back to the ultimate sentiment that Rex truly values his shorty.
