“Only You” by The Flying Pickets
On one hand, “Only You” comes off like your average love song, with the singer expressing his affection for the addressee. On the other, at certain junctures, it sounds as if their relationship is on the verge of dissolving or perhaps has already done so. But either way, the singer is more or less letting it be known that he has or had an emotional dependency on the addressee. In other words, whether this is a past or present reliance is a matter of debate.
This song was written by Vince Clarke and originally recorded by a duo he was a part of called Yazoo (aka Yaz).
The following year The Flying Pickets, an acappella group from London, released their version, specifically during December of 1983. It proved to be the group’s signature song, not only reaching number one in England but doing so during the highly-competitive Christmas season. Moreover when it managed to do so, it became the first acappella-rendered number one in the Official UK Charts’ history.
Their rendition also topped music listings in Germany and Ireland. Furthermore, it charted in at least 10 other countries. And the track was put out by Virgin Records, being featured on The Flying Pickets’ album “Lost Boys”.
The Flying Pickets are the producers of their own version of “Only You”. They worked alongside John Sherry in that regard.
