All about the Ramones

The journey of the group began when founding members Johnny and Tommy, met in Forest Hills, Queens. They were both in a garage band at that time known as the Tangerine Puppets.

Colvinhad just relocated from Germany to their neighborhood and they formed a trio. The trio split into a quartet when they met Jeffrey Hyman, a former singer for the glam rock band named Sniper.

The band was officially established in 1974 after the four had made the decision to be a group. The brain behind the band’s name was Douglas Colvin. Douglas began the shenanigans by changing his name to Dee Dee Ramone and convincing each of his colleagues to do the same, while naming their band Ramones to make their brand complete, which they did.

They secured a period of time for their rehearsal at the Manhattan’s Performance Studios. They had their debut performance on 30 March 1974 at the performance studio.

There was a swift change in roles due to some band member’s inability to multitask. Tommy Ramone played the drums while Johnny became a vocalist.

The career of this group set sail with a residency at one of the biggest club’s in Manhattan’s Kansas City called CBGB. Their first play was on August 16, 1974.

The reputation that the punk rock band had attained for being noisy and loud began with them regularly performing at clubs. They have been recounted severally as being unique from their style of dressing to their style of music.

By 1975, they had garnered attention and signed a record deal with Sire Records, an American record label founded in 1966.

Their first album, Ramones was recorded in February 1976 with an amount of $6,000 with fourteen songs capsuled in it and was released the same year. The group throughout the release of their album toured continuously, never taking a break.

They had their first appearance in Britain on July 4, 1976. They released their second album Ramones Leave Home and it became a hit for the band in England.

After that, they relentlessly worked on releasing more singles and albums following each other back to back.

The band was on a success train when Tommy Ramone left in 1977 and was replaced by Marc Bell who as custom demanded for the Ramones, quickly changed his name to Marky Ramone.

With their new band member, the group recorded their fourth album Road to Ruin, through which they attempted to change their sound but it didn’t quite work.

They restored their initial rock style with their album Bono Goes to Bitburg which was only available in the United States due to the political motivation backing it but later switched to a streamline lyrical style which they saw through till the end of their career.

After the band returned from one of their tours in 1983, Marky Ramone left the band and was replaced by drummer Richard Beau (Richie Ramone) who also left in 1987. Former member Marky re-joined the group.

Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Colvin) left the band to pursue his solo career and was replaced by Christopher Joseph Ward (C.J Ramone). During this time, some members had been struggling with alcoholism and were undergoing major treatments.

The band had recovered by the early 1990s and signed to a new record label, Radioactive Records. The label produced their album Mondo Bizarro in 1992 earning the band their first Gold-certified album in Brazil after it sold 100, 000 copies.

The Ramones made their appearance in television series, The Simpsons. The final days for the Ramones as a group together were from 1992 to 1996 after the release of the albums Acid Eaters and Adios Amigos which was the last album the group released. The Ramones disbanded after 22 years of their career together with Joey, Johnny, Marky and C.J as the final line-up.
