“Right Now” by Elaine
What the vocalist is dealing with in the featured narrative, simply put, is a toxic lover. And his toxicity is manifest in two primary ways. First is that he mistreats her emotionally. But that is not to imply that he is verbally abusive, though such may also be gleaned from the lyrics.
But more expressly, he does things like deceive her and play with her emotions. Moreover he doesn’t seem to be particularly concerned when she is in her feelings. And in her feelings she is, as the vocalist is dealing with the personally-harrowing experience of basically falling out of love with her significant other.
And secondly, related to his deceitful ways is the addressee’s tendency to cheat on the singer. She feels this to be especially disrespectful considering that these same girls happen to be her fans. In fact she interprets all of the above as being indicative of the fact that the addressee actually ‘looks down on her’. Or more directly put, his actions indicate that he does not value her as a partner.
Female Empowerment
But with that being said, this is in fact a female-empowerment song. And the vocalist’s romantic discontent is actually just the premise of what is being put forth. For conclusively, Elaine’s not even trying to let this dude cause her to be overrun with emotions.
To the contrary, she is “in (her) bag right now”, basically meaning that her primary concern is income generation. Or more specifically she is in fact making it, with “the game (being) icy” and all.
So is the vocalist upset with the way her boyfriend is treating her? Yes. But at the same time she is not going to let that less-than-ideal aspect of her life distract her from the main goal.
Indeed whereas this storyline may have a general applicability, in between the lines Elaine is more-individually acknowledging the fact that she is a famous musician. And as such, she is not about to ruin that over a failed romance. Nor is she going to let her boyfriend topple her, in any way, shape or form, from that lofty position.

Elaine
Elaine is from Pretoria, one of the three capitol cities of South Africa (the others being Cape Town and Bloemfontein). She became the first female artist in her country to top both of the domestic Apple Music and iTunes albums charts without actually having a record deal. And the name of the project to achieve that feat was her debut EP, 2019’s “Elements”.
Facts about “Right Now”
“Right Now” was released on 12 May 2021, making it Elaine’s fourth single overall.
As at the release of this track, the songstress is just 22 years old.
The music video to “Right Now” was directed by a fellow South African by the name of Nape Phasha.
According to Elaine, recording “Right Now” proved to have a therapeutic effect on the singer. Indeed, as put forth earlier, it is pretty obvious that this song is quite personal. And she came into the studio on that day “carrying” a significant amount of emotional baggage, apparently of the romance-related variety.
But after she got through releasing the vocals, her “concept of love transformed” from being focused on her partner to being more centered on herself. And the vocalist is in fact the exclusive writer of this track.
Meanwhile its producers are Andrew Morin and another musician, who goes by the tag of Elizée.
