“Ruin My Life” by Simple Plan (ft. Deryck Whibley)

The nature of the relationship between the singer and addressee is never specified. But as usual in these cases, the simplest way to make sense of it all is by presuming that they are lovers. And as far as the addressee goes, the vocalist is depicting her as someone who, most simply put, enjoys messing with him. That is to say that she is constantly hurling words in his direction which, if he were to take them to heart as intended, would destroy his self-esteem or as he puts it, ‘ruin his life’.

But the thesis sentiment does not revolve around that reality per se. Rather it is based on the singer celebrating, if you will, that after being subject to this abuse for some time, now he has finally reached the point where the things the addressee says no longer preoccupies his mind.

Indeed in the past, he basically loved her more than he did himself. So conclusively, this song centers on a man who has finally freed himself from being emotionally influenced by a verbally abusive lover.
