“Seven” by Natalie Jane

Natalie Jane’s “Seven” is premised on the narrator questioning the validity of her past romance with the addressee. Such an idea is where the title of the song comes from, i.e. Natalie wondering if the “seven months” they were together “was just a fling”.

To some extent she’s doing so rhetorically, as it’s obvious that there were some serious feelings involved, several of which are still extant to this day. But the reason such is a plausible question is because she also knows that on the very night the two of them decided to part ways, they “both went out to go hook up” with someone else.

Another reason she feels this way (that maybe the addressee wasn’t that serious) is due to the fact that Natalie seems convinced that he loves the girl he has hooked up with since more than her. And she has ample evidence to support that theory also. For instance, back when she was with the addressee, he encouraged her to dye her hair blonde, which is apparently something the vocalist never did. But lo and behold, the implication is that his new girl does possess such a hair color.

So now Natalie is convinced that said lady is the one her ex was really desiring all along. But that said, it ain’t like the vocalist herself is guiltless, since she proceeded to live out her ‘fantasies’ also.

“Seven” is a song of Heartbreak

So, this is a relatively-complex song of heartbreak. Usually in such scenarios, the vocalist comes off more like an innocent victim. But in this case Natalie is noting similarities between her and her ex, even if she is disappointed in him in the aftermath. Furthermore, though she is suffering from some degree of heartbreak, the vocalist is mature enough to admit that the signs that their romance was not going to last were there from early on, but she went along for the ride anyway “because it was thrilling”.
