Sara Bareilles’ song “Shiny” serves as a tribute to mothers. The lyrics focus on Sara’s perception of her own mother as the epitome of the feelings people have about their moms in general.
She paints a picture of her own mom as an individual who diligently took care of her and to this day is concerned about her well-being. Sara also acknowledges that she does not understand every aspect of her mom’s thinking, indeed even enlightening the listener that there are some things mother intentionally “keeps hidden”. But that is also her “favorite part” of mama. And when she looks at her mom, “gold is all (she) see(s)”. This inspires her and makes her feel that she too can be “shiny”.

Sara Bareilles released this track as a single on 10th day of May 2019 “in honor of Mother’s Day”. FYI, Mother’s Day of 2019 was two days later. That said, it should be noted that “Shiny” originally came out on 5 April 2019 as part of her album Amidst the Chaos.
