“Soul” by Lee Brice

This love song is titled “soul”, implying that the vocalist is set harp on his sweetheart’s inner qualities. But about half of the lyrics are also dedicated to his strong physical/sexual attraction to her.

Yes, in the chorus, Lee Brice does put forth that he “like(s)” the addressee’s “soul”, as she possesses a good heart. And the second verse insinuates that his feelings for her indeed transcend the realm of amorous romance. But by contrast, the first verse is a bit, let’s say unusual in the way the vocalist asserts that the addressee’s sexual prowess got a hold on him.

In the pre-chorus, he also puts forth a desire to ‘kiss her from head to toe’, which doesn’t necessarily sound like a thing a man would say in trying to convince his honeybun that his love is grounded more in her internal attributes.

But in fact, this is a song which features an ample amount of religious terminology, on top of the fact that the word “soul” itself is one we often attribute to the spiritual realm. So it may be that the reason the track is titled so, at least in part, is as an acknowledgement of that way. Indeed in a way, what the vocalist is actually putting forth is an idea like loving the addressee is akin to his religion or at least is so pleasurable that he’s willing to be ‘made a sinner’ in the name of joyfully being intimate with her.

Did Lee Brice write this song?

Lee didn’t have a hand in writing “Soul”, with that responsibility rather being handled by Kevin Caddish and Tony Ferrari. But as a prominent professional musician, he has many songs shopped to him. And this is one which, according to Lee, he developed an immediate affinity for upon hearing. But Lee also admitted that initially he wasn’t too keen on releasing “Soul”, as he though its “funky feel” may turn off his established fans, who are more hardcore country. However, said fans assured him that such was not the case.

The producers of this song are Ben Glover and Kyle Jacobs.
