Sugar Ray’s “Every Morning” Lyrics Meaning

From the intro of “Every Morning”, there are signs that listeners may be headed into, let’s say territory that some of us may deem dark. In the introduction the vocalist notices a cond-m, presumably a used one, around his “girlfriend’s… bed”. Furthermore, he doesn’t even know if it is one left over from their own intercourse or from homegirl being with someone else.

Either way, based on the vocalist’s own words, it’s like he picks the “halo” up with the intent of using it for a future sexual encounter – completely taking the concept of frugality to a whole new level. And you may want to put the kids away for what’s coming next. That’s because even though the lyrics of “Every Morning” do rely notably on metaphors and a lack of directness, things get even wilder from here.

For you see, McGrath has admitted that in the first verse and concluding chorus, when he refers to his sweetheart ‘turning him around’ and what have you, what he’s actually referring to is pe-g-ng. Or put more frankly dear readers, he likes taking it in the behind.

But that being said, the following two verses are a reiteration of the intro. Well actually the third verse is a repeat of the intro, but the second features a different conclusion. And in that case the vocalist comes off as being a bit more human, i.e. concerned about his girlfriend’s infidelity and whether or not she actually loves him.

But apparently the thesis sentiment of this piece, why Mark looks forward to waking up with his sweetheart every morning, is because, most frankly put, he enjoys being peg-ed.

However, not all listeners have proven to be fans of “Every Morning”. For instance, in 2012, BuzzFeed ranked this as being one of the “The 20 Worst Songs of the ‘90s”.

The entire Sugar Ray crew is credited with writing this song alongside its producer, David Kahne.

Both Mark and Rodney are still down with the band to this day.
