“Summer Clothes” by The Wonder Years

“Summer Clothes” definitely reads like a celebration of summer and beyond that one that appears to be centered on the reckless abandon of youth. More specifically, we find the vocalist chillin’ with one “Justin” during a hot summer day. To make a long story short, the two of them seem to end up hanging out at some amusement park and later, during the early morning hours, ‘meeting up with strangers’ on a ‘deserted beach’ for a mutual chillin’.

Also, the vocalist and addressee almost end up drowning in the water or something but more so, as depicted, due to them being “too young… dumb” – caught up in carefree, f*-k-the-world kind of attitude – than the depth of the water itself. And as somewhat over-explained by Dan Campbell, that’s the concept this song is designed to speak to more than enjoying the summer itself, i.e. a moment in one’s life – during youth, if you will – that is characterized by a joyful recklessness.

The Wonder Years

When most people hear “The Wonder Years” they may think of the 1990s’ TV show, but there is also a pop band of the same name, from Pennsylvania, that came out during the mid-to-late aughts. It took some time for them act to catch on, but it seems that once they signed to Hopeless Records in 2010, their fortunes began to change. As such all of the studio albums they have released since then – 2011’s “Suburbia I’ve Given You All and Now I’m Nothing”, 2013’s “The Greatest Generation”, 2015’s “No Closer to Heaven” and 2018’s “Sister Cities” – all scored within the top 20 of the Billboard 200. Also, the most-recent of those projects topped Billboards’ Independent Albums chart.
