“The Baddest” by BGYO

There is perhaps no word in the English lexicon that has enjoyed more diverse modern colloquial usages than the term “bad”. And it was hip-hop culture in particular which established this word as pointing to the idea of someone, i.e. a female, who is very attractive. And it is in such a context that the term is being utilized in BGYO’s “The Baddest”.

Thus when the vocalist refers to the addressee as “the baddest of them all”, what that means, most simply put, is that he considers her to be the most-attractive woman he knows. And “The Baddest” is not set in a nightclub, as songs based on this same theme usually tend to go. Instead said addressee would be someone whom the singer knows in general and has a major crush on and thus fantasizes about regularly.

Also as implied, even though this would classify as a love song, it’s not as if the vocalist is admiring the addressee’s inner qualities. Rather, his sentiment reads purely as a case of being caught up in the addressee’s looks, with that point coming across even more strongly than tracks we usually study from this region of the world (i.e. Southeast Asia).

So it would appear that P-pop may be a bit more liberal than its northern neighbor, K-pop. And in this case, BGYO uses the opportunity to celebrate “the baddest” girl in the ‘hood.

Lyrics of "The Baddest" by BGYO

BGYO

This group’s name is actually an acronym, which stands for a relatively-lengthy phrase. And the said phrase is: “becoming the change, going further, you and I, originally Filipino”. And as put forth in that statement BGYO is in fact from the Philippines.

As of the writing of this post they have five members deep. They are:

  • Akira Morishita
  • John Lloyd Toreliza (aka “JL”)
  • Michael Claver Jr. (“Mikki”)
  • Nathaniel Porcalla (“Nate”)
  • Angelo Troy Rivera (“Gelo”)

Angelo is the group’s frontman.

BGYO is officially listed as having been in existence since early-2021, though their union dates back to 2018. This is a boy band whose formation has obviously been inspired by the rise of K-pop.

And in that regard BGYO even came about as K-poppers invariably due – as the result of a reality competition. And even though this may be the first time we’ve heard of BGYO their label, Star Music, has obviously done a good job of establishing them firmly in the Filipino entertainment industry during the few years they’ve been extant.
