The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” Lyrics Meaning

The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” is a strange love song. In fact the singer seems to be expressing more affection for Friday itself than an actual person.

This track basically features Robert Smith highlighting the different days of the week and expressing why they are unimportant to him – with the exception of Friday. Rather on Friday, as the title suggests, he is “in love” with the person he is singing to. And as alluded to earlier, during the other days of the week he is completely uninterested in how she feels or what she is doing.

While this may read like a cruel sentiment, this track is actually, in the words of its writer, a “happy type of pop song”. Indeed the message the singer is actually relaying is that it is on Friday when his lover is at her best. Apparently she also looks forward to this day just as much as he does, since when they are out on dates all she does is smile and fascinate him.

So yes, it is obvious that Smith cares a lot about this particular lady. But he may appreciate Friday even more for its ability to bring out the best in her.

I think that he is only talking to his love in the part of the song where they talk about dressing up and watching her enjoy a late snack. The rest of the time he is telling the days that aren’t Friday date night that he wishes he could skip to the next date night and describing monotonous and frustrating feelings of daily life that fill the time between.
Your version is sad and seems to reflect a negative world view, apparently.
