“The Grey” by Bad Omens

There is one simple way to understand Bad Omens’ “The Grey”. And this is by proceeding with this analysis under the presumption that the vocalist is addressing someone very special to him (as most strongly insinuated in the pre-chorus).

The lyrics of this piece are to some extent indirect. But what becomes obvious from the onset, even if relayed metaphorically, is that this is a tumultuous relationship we’re dealing with.

But it appears to be one of those where even though the vocalist is convinced that he and the addressee share a toxic association, he’s in love and there cannot entertain the prospect of deading it.

And speaking of realism, Noah doesn’t proceed to make all types of promises that he’s unsure he’ll be able to keep. Yes, an effort may be made – but no guarantees. However, the post-chorus does suggest that he has identified the problem as an attempt on his behalf to ‘try to be someone else’.

It is not clear what that notion is specifically meant to point to. But the implication is that the vocalist is going to make an attempt to forsake whatever alter ego he has adopted since this relationship began.

The Grey

The above brings us to the title. And most simply explained, it is based on his resolution to revert back to his previous self. So actually, one of the most important aspects of this narrative is what type of alter ego he did adopt – and in the process ‘fading away into the grey’.

And considering that he dubs said transformation so, i.e. utilizing the color/symbol “grey”, then the further implication, once again, would be that the result of it was less-than-ideal. But that said, it appears ultimately up to us listeners to respectively interpret what exactly ‘fading away into the grey’ means.

I listen to the song and mental and spiritual struggles such as extreme regret, not being yourself, etc. come to mind. Desintegration of your innermost self and the need and pain of having to work toward inner peace, integration of the self and authencity again.

After watching a few interviews of Noah mentioning, living with his grandma…. I feel this song could be about his family, and those issues that come with that
