The O’Jays

The O’Jays are a legendary R&B group from the United States. The group formed in Canton, Ohio in 1958.

Originally the group was made up of the following musicians:

  1. Bill Isles
  2. Bobby Massey
  3. Eddie Levert
  4. Walter Williams
  5. William Powell

Over the years, the group underwent several lineup changes, but Levert and Williams have been constants, and they continue to perform as The O’Jays today (2023).

The group achieved their greatest success when they signed with Philadelphia International Records in the early 1970s. Working with the legendary songwriting and production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, The O’Jays released a string of hits that have since become classics, such as “Love Train”, “Ship Ahoy“, “Back Stabbers” and “Forever Mine“.

Their music typically explores themes of love, relationships, and social and political issues, delivered with smooth vocal harmonies and lush, sophisticated production.

The O’Jays were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, and they are widely regarded as one of the key figures in the development of the Philadelphia soul sound. Their music continues to be celebrated and enjoyed by fans around the world.
