“Working My Way Back to You” by The Spinners

The title of this track is of course a metaphor. And the notion it is centered on is the singer making a full-hearted attempt to win back the love of the addressee, i.e. his ex.

This song has been noted for the frankness of its lyrics. The singer is not only taking the blame for his relationship with the addressee dissolving, but he is also painfully honest in detailing the ways in which he messed up. Indeed he is truthful throughout, as he also doesn’t hold back in terms of pointing out just how lonely and depressed he has become without her. So combining his guilt with his loneliness, he is now determined to get her back. And yes, he understands that the “road is kinda long”, as in achieving this goal will not be easy. But more to the point he is begging his sweetheart’s forgiveness and inherently pledging to love her right henceforth.
