“Light of Love” by Florence + The Machine

“Light of Love” is premised on the singer dealing with some type of harrowing depression. This theme is presenting throughout using various metaphors. But the underlying message is that despite this sensation, she feels that she must fight on. Or another way to look at the song, considering the outro especially, is that even though she wants to give up she must face the world as it is given to her.

Indeed as Florence Welch has pointed out in describing this song, even when we, as people, are in our most-depressed state, we should come to the understanding that we have a role to play in the world. Indeed it is the “only place you can be of service”. So even though throughout the track her overall disposition is less-than-favorable, even dire, she also realizes that in actuality she is “so far from death”.

So her overall goal is not to expedite her demise. Rather she is faithful that if she ‘keeps pushing on’, she will eventually see better days. She is absolutely sure she’d someday get to the point where her own “light of love” – which exists within all of us – will finally shine through and brighten up her life overall.
