“Rainmaker” by Bruce Springsteen
The term rainmaker is somewhat ubiquitous in early-21st century pop media, meaning different things to different people. And on this track, the Boss uses it as an appellation for someone who is basically a false prophet. This person comes around as the people are going through a particularly dry, i.e. worrisome, period. And the rain he promises to make is symbolic of alleviation from this situation. From the bridge going, it can be ascertained that Bruce Springsteen is referring to the likes of politicians. In fact even though he penned “Rainmaker” some years back, it has been put forth that the reason he dropped it in 2020 in particular is to serve as an anti-Trump song.
This is a song that Bruce Springsteen wrote and also co-produced. And the other producer is one of his regular musical collaborators, Ron Aniello.
Bruce has been in the game for decades, and this track actually came out as part of his 20th studio album on 23 October 2020. Said project, entitled “Letter to You”, was put forth by Columbia Records. It birthed the following official singles:
