“Again” by Lenny Kravitz

What it reads like Lenny Kravitz is speaking to, most generally put, is the concept of love at first sight. Or as presented, leading up to this point he was a woefully lonely soul. Then it’s like, completely by chance, the vocalist crosses paths with the addressee. And instantly he recognizes her as his soulmate, and his heart rejoices accordingly.

But let’s just say that although you see someone who you instantly fall in love with, that doesn’t mean that you’ll actually act upon that emotion. After all, it isn’t as easy to approach a total stranger, especially one that you’re smitten by, as it may sound. So concerning the title as used in context, the implication is that Lenny never actually steps to homegirl. That is why by the time all is said and done, he is left wondering ‘if he’ll ever see her again’.

So the thesis sentiment revolves around the vocalist being in love with the addressee. And considering that he doesn’t seem to actually know her, his mind proceeds to do a bit of fantasizing. For instance, in the bridge, he envisions her as someone who is in a similar romantic predicament as he is, i.e. ‘longing for her king’ – a role which Lenny is obviously convinced he can fulfill.

In the second verse, he further envisions himself as someone who would never let another cause the addressee any type of emotional grief, i.e. serving the role of her protector.

Takeaway

At the end of the day, perhaps we can also hope that the vocalist will cross paths with this lady “again” and the next time around actually muster up the courage to step to her. Or else by the logical looks of things, he’s going to be kicking himself into the foreseeable future for letting the opportunity to secure someone he perceives as his soulmate pass him by.
