“Agatha All Along” by Kathryn Hahn

Kathryn Hahn’s “Agatha All Along” is not only a song from a soundtrack but also one of those types of tracks where you need to be familiar with the film it was featured on in order to really understand the lyrics. For instance, you may be wondering who exactly is this “Sparky” that she killed?

WandaVision

On this piece, actress Kathryn Hahn has taken on the role of Agatha Harknessan evil witch she portrays in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). More specifically she does so on “WandaVision”, which is like the first true MCU television series to come out (no offense, “Agents of Shield”).

“WandaVision” is based on a storyline where Wanda Maximoff (aka the Scarlet Witch, another old-school Marvel character) creates a fictional reality based on the idealized 1960s’ sitcoms of old in order to escape the real world. And in this false reality, Agatha Harkness, up until the point this song is introduced (at the end of the seventh episode), is cast into the role (sort of by force) of Maximoff’s aloof neighbor in her sitcom.

Meanwhile said reality, despite Wanda being a powerful spell caster herself, keeps experiencing major internal mishaps – going off the intended script as written by Maximoff. By and large, she is confused by these anomalies but continues to operate as normal.

Then finally, once again at the end of the seventh episode, it is revealed that it was “Agatha all along” who was causing these mishaps intentionally to fulfill her own selfish purposes. And it is Harkness herself who makes this revelation to Maximoff while holding her captive, still inside this false reality, via the usage of a 1960s’ motif herself. For instance, this tune was actually put together based on the theme songs of classic TV series “The Munsters” (1964-1966) and “The Addams Family” (1964-1966). And note that both of those shows, despite being sitcoms, are like “WandaVision” based on the supernatural.

All in all

So basically, “Agatha All Along” is intended to be sort of a parody of 1960s’ sitcom theme songs. And considering that Agatha has once again sprung a major trap on who she considers to be her rival, Wanda, she is basically making fun of the fact that she’s been able to hide her true colors for all of this time, right under her nose.

And such is what the lyrics are based on – letting Maximoff (and the viewers of WandaVision) know just how nasty and manipulative Agatha actually is. For instance, the aforementioned Sparky was the Maximoff’s family dog, whom Agatha now surprisingly boasts that she slew, just for spite.

And truthfully, the original rendering of this tune on show is in fact entertaining, comical and shocking. That is why it has proven to be one of the more-memorable moments from what is currently (as of early-2021) the most-popular show on television (according to IMDb).

Success of “Agatha All Along”

That being said, no one would really expect a one-minute song found at the end of a single episode of a TV show to blow up.  By contrast, the tune instantly went viral upon being uploaded onto Spotify after “Breaking the Fourth Wall” aired. For instance, the track topped iTunes Soundtracks Chart.

And it also made it onto the top 20 of iTunes’ main chart. And going back to the first sentence of this paragraph, Kathryn Hahn herself was surprised by just how much this song caught on with the masses.
