“Catalonia” by Vance Joy

To many, travelling is food for the soul. But with a hectic lifestyle evolved around touring and writing songs, Vance Joy enjoyed some down time during the pandemic with his family and girlfriend. He split his year with half in Australia followed by Spain.

“Catalonia” speaks about his six-month stay in the autonomous community in Spain with his girlfriend. During his residence there, the sights and sounds left a lasting impression on him. Heck, the experience still lives fresh in his mind.

One such example is the region’s historic Gothic Quarter that houses hip bars, clubs, and restaurants where he spent enjoying “a tall dry Vermouth” away from the summer heat.

Home to more than a dozen beautiful, sandy beaches surrounding the three coastlines, the Gothic Quarter (which is a province in Barcelona) is probably one of the busiest attractions to thousands of tourists and locals alike. Bustling with vibrancy, Joy expresses how he can hear the community “across the ocean”.

At the end of the day, Joy has described the lyrics of “Catalonia” as simply put, “a snapshot” of his everyday life in Barcelona.

the Gothic Quarter (which is a province in Barcelona) — It is really a neighbourhood, one of the oldest areas of the city, with traces back to the Roman settlements in the city.
    Barri Gòtic in Catalan.
