That said, their most-recent studio album to date, “Lex Hives”, was dropped all the way back in 2012. But as of the release date of “Countdown to Shutdown”, The Hives are on the verge of releasing their sixth-studio LP, titled “The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons”.

So with “Countdown to Shutdown” being made public on 13 June 2023, this is the project’s second single following “Bogus Operandi”.

Credits for “Countdown to Shutdown”

The writer of this song is Hives’ frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist. And for the record, he is backed by guitarists Nicholaus Arson and Vigilante Carlstroem, bassist The Johan and Only and drummer Chris Dangerous, with all of the above being stage rather than legal names.

The producer of the track, as with “The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons” at large, is Patrik Berger. And the music video was directed by an entity known as SNASK, which appears to be a production company from Stockholm.

The Lyrics of “Countdown to Shutdown”

To be perfectly honest, it’s very difficult to ascertain what exactly this song is supposed to be about. Of course these days, post-COVID 19 pandemic and all, it’s safe to presume that when most of us hear a word like “shutdown” and especially as presented in this title, we think of the likes of businesses or even society itself being brought to a halt en masse.

And lyrically, the first half of the chorus does sorta have an ominous foreboding, as seemingly does the beginning of the second verse. But as for the latter half of the chorus, again, it’s difficult to see the intended point, besides the vocalist proclaiming that he “ain’t never gonna quit”.

And as far as said vocalist, Pelle Almqvist’s, explanation of this track, he alluded to it being sort of a general rock song. Not just any rock song but one to be enjoyed by the audience at large. Or as he put it, what the titular “countdown” is leading towards is up to respective listener interpretation.

It could be something as frightening as “the financial collapse”, or an event as enjoyable as “the weekend bender you’ve been waiting for”. Or as the frontman comprehensively defined “Countdown to Shutdown”, it is “a versatile banger for all your summer rock needs”.

So in playing it safe we will also close on that note, that this piece is very much open-ended. And as such, different listeners are bound to derive their own meanings from it.

This is too dumb for me to even believe it was generated by AI. He mentions Maslows ladder in the first part, and Ponzi Scheme’s in the second part. It’s about financial exploitation, and it’s not particularly subtle.

It’s an anti Covid lockdowns song
